In preparation for the open board meeting of Virginia Baptists Committed on Thursday, September 16, 2010,  at Patterson Ave. Baptist Church in Richmond, the Board is seeking nominations for candidates for Baptist General Association officers at the Annual Meeting, November 9-10, 2010, in Hampton, VA.

Virginia Baptist Committed nominating process reflects:

(1) serving as an officer of the Baptist General Association (President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President) is not an entry-level position.

(2) offices should be filled by persons with a demonstrated love for and understanding of the broad BGAV family.

(3) candidates should reflect documented support of the BGAV and its Kingdom Advance vision (church financial support of BGAV, service on committees, task forces, mission trips, etc.).

(4) candidates should support such core Baptist values as priesthood of the believer, autonomy of the local church, soul freedom and religious liberty.

(5) candidates should reflect the BGAV custom of alternating presidential candidates between qualified clergy and laity.

(6) candidates should reflect the practice in recent years of nominating a successfully serving First Vice-President to succeed the President, believing in the high value of this experience.

(7) over time, the roster of candidates should reflect the wide and rich diversity of Virginia Baptist life (male/female, clergy/laity, geography, size of church, ethnicity, etc.).

(8) such nominations are too important to rely upon the contemporaneous and unvetted inspiration of the moment and should be made with careful attention to the above details and presented to the annual messengers as “vetted” candidates after prayerful reflection and review.

(9) affirm that the nominating process is and has always been open and that any individual or group may nominate candidates for any office.
